Archaeology
is the anthropological study of past human culture. Archaeologists
seek to describe the cultural behaviors of past humans, from
our earliest ancestors who walked the savannas in Africa several
million years ago to our recent ancestors who populated the
cities and farmsteads of our land just 100 years ago. In studying
these behaviors, archaeologists must rely on scant clues procured
from the material culture left behind by humans that once
occupied and used the area. Archaeological study is an interplay
between archaeological data (sites, features, artifacts, and
ecofacts), the people who occupied the site and left the data,
and the archaeologists, who must interpret the data to reconstruct
the culture and behaviors of the past humans to the best of
his or her capabilities.
